New Year's traditions include: homemade fireworks, dressing in new clothes and avoiding giving money!
Russia starts its year on January 1st since 1699 and a decree of the very European Peter the Great (previously in autumn, with agricultural activities). The New Year is a very popular holiday, celebrated with the family on the night of 31 December. One makes fat meals around a well-stocked table that can count dishes that will please the totem animal of the coming year (Buddhism obliges). Among the traditions: homemade fireworks, dress in new clothes, avoid offering money (otherwise you will have to give it back all year long).
