The recent metro, as it's called here, is in fact light rail transit: not an underground subway, but a set of outdoor trains served by several tramway-style stations. Launched in 2019, the huge project is being carried out in several phases and will eventually link the capital and the central cities of the island to the airport. To date, the main towns (Curepipe, Ebène, Floréal, Quatre Bornes etc.) are linked to Port Louis, relieving congestion in the most densely populated part of Mauritius and its economic heartland.
