A very popular Hindu celebration that sees processions form throughout the island to the sacred lake of Grand Bassin.

It is the great night of Shiva, one of the most popular celebrations of the island, which is accompanied by 5 days of festivities. Just before, thousands of Hindus walk towards the Great Basin Lake whose water is considered sacred like that of the Ganges. Dressed in white, they form superb processions and carry kanwars, miniature temples decorated with flowers. When they arrive at Grand Bassin, they draw some water from it and pour it over the Shiva Linga of their village on the day of the festival - an object symbolizing Shiva's power and fecundity.
