All over the world, this festival marks the end of the Muslim fasting period or Ramadan. In Mauritius, unlike other religious festivals which are often accompanied by processions, parades and various demonstrations, it is not celebrated in the street but in the privacy of families. People pray and eat biryani, a dish of oriental origin requiring hours of preparation. Prayers, exchange of gifts and wishes, visits to families and alms to the poor are the main events of this sacred day.
