This Chinese festival, also called Moon Festival, is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar - the night of the full moon. It is one of the most important celebrations of the Chinese calendar. Originally an agricultural festival, it also commemorates the victory of the Chinese over the Mongols. In Mauritius, it does not give rise to a public holiday even though it is accompanied by symbolic gestures. Mooncakes are prepared and offered to relatives. Tradition has it that these sweets contained the date of the insurrection before the revolt.
