Hindu festival of light. The houses of the followers are illuminated with electric garlands and candles.
Divali, the festival of light, is celebrated by many Mauritians, even non-Hindus. It takes place on a moonless night in the month of Kartika. For some, it recalls the victory of the god Râma over the king of demons Râvana, for others, the liberation of the goddess Lakshmi from the clutches of Bali. For this festival of renewal, the followers illuminate their houses with multiple electric garlands or oil lamps and, after a purifying bath and some offerings, pray to the divine light to bring them prosperity and abundance throughout the year.
