This national holiday celebrates the independence achieved on February 4, 1948. It is celebrated throughout the island and the Sri Lankan flag is raised. The main event takes place in Colombo. The president makes a national speech and pays tribute to the country's heroes and observes two minutes of silence to honor their memory.
