This national holiday celebrates the independence achieved on February 4, 1948. It is celebrated throughout the island and the Sri Lankan flag is raised. The main event takes place in Colombo. The president makes a national speech and pays tribute to the country's heroes and observes two minutes of silence to honor their memory. Military parades are held in the city center to demonstrate the strength of the various army corps. National unity is promoted in the media and through concerts, dances and parades.
