Interview: MY SEYCHELLES

by Baptiste Tharreau, author of the guide

Baptiste Tharreau has been traveling the world for Le Petit Futé for almost fifteen years. He first set foot in the Seychelles in 2011, and returns every year to find great deals on the archipelago's paradisiacal beaches. In the Seychelles, he loves diving, sunsets, lobster for dinner, but above all the smiles and legendary Creole hospitality.

Mahé's museums and galleries are generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, until 1 p.m. on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. The Victoria Botanical Gardens and the Vallée de Mai are open to visitors every day.

To be booked To be booked

Generally speaking, all excursions can be booked through local service providers. However, it may be better to wait until you get there, in order to deal with the weather.

Budget & Tips Budget & Tips

In Victoria, the Kaz Zanana is a magnificent example of Creole architecture that can be visited free of charge. In Praslin, there is a group ticket (600 SR) to visit the Vallée de Mai and Fond Ferdinand, two must-sees. On La Digue, buying a ticket for the Domaine de l'Union (150 SR) after 4:30 p.m., which gives access to the unmissable Anse Source d'Argent beach, and spending the afternoon there, is also valid for the whole of the following day.

Main events Main events

The Kreol festival at the end of October is the biggest event in the country. Another popular event is the Seychelles Ocean Festival in Mahé, also in November.

Guided tours Guided tours

In the Vallée de Mai, independent guides offer their services. Negotiable... But all visits can be made on your own. Praslin's excursionists (guides/skippers) are a must for a day's boat trip to the surrounding islands. A must. Guided tours are available at Fond Ferdinand.

Smokers Smokers

As in France, it is forbidden to smoke in public places and restaurants. Outside, be careful with the environment and don't leave your cigarette butts lying around.

Tourist traps Tourist traps

At Vallee de Mai, much of the fun lies in being alone in the middle of nature. Before picking up a guide at the entrance, make sure you're not with a group of 15 or even 20 people. Otherwise, in Beau Vallon (Mahé) and Côte d'Or (Praslin), beware of touts offering excursions, and always check that the excursionist is beach-side.
