The stupa dates from the 2nd century BC, and was probably built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka to shelter Buddha's ashes. Many pilgrims from China, Bhutan or Burma visit this highly sacred place every year. A headless Buddha sitting in a lotus, a horse, two women's bodies are visible in the form of bas-reliefs.
