Bhutan. Alcohol-related death rates among young people have soared in recent years. Ara, a grain alcohol distilled at 20°, is consumed in all circumstances throughout the country, forcing the government to take drastic measures. The consumption of alcohol is prohibited under the age of 18, and the country has declared Tuesday "Dry Day" (alcohol-free day). Consequently, bars and clubs are closed on this day.
What's very local
Want to discover a typical Bhutanese hangout? Go to a "drayang", a kind of karaoke bar open from 9pm to 1am, where you can listen to local singers perform songs. Basically, for US$5, you "order" a song to be performed by a random or self-selected singer. A very fashionable way of showing the person you order a song from that you like it..
