To celebrate the Nepalese New Year, nothing beats Bhaktapur: the festivities last one week and the atmosphere is unique!
For the Nepalese New Year, Bhaktapur is the place to be! 2 teams representing the upper city and the lower city harness a rope to pull, each in its own direction, a wagon topped by a pagoda. The winners of this tournament then walk the wagon for several days in the streets of the winning part of the city, to ensure its protection and favours for the New Year. A 25m m mast is then erected and the battle between the two teams resumes to knock down this mast. Once it is on the ground, the New Year begins.
