In all Buddhist shrines in Nepal (Lumbini, Bodnath, Patan), the birth of Buddha is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony.
The birthday of Siddharta Gautama, known as Buddha, is a traditional festival of Buddhism. It celebrates the three major stages of his life: his birth, his attainment of Nirvana and his death. On this occasion, ceremonies are held in all Buddhist shrines in Nepal: Swayambhunath, Bodnath, Patan, and of course Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. This event gives the monks the opportunity to exhibit rare collections of precious thangka and mandalas usually kept in monasteries, and to engage in colourful dances.
