What budget for activities and outings Maldives?

The Maldives is one of the world's most expensive destinations. Since the 1990s, the country has made a 180° turn towards luxury tourism. As a result, you'll need to pay at least US$250 for a night in mid-season, and US$800 in high season. The only way to reduce your budget is to visit a local island. Overnight stays generally cost around US$90 for a double room with breakfast. But beware of transfer costs. The further away the island is from Malé, the more expensive the transfer will be.

While vacations in the Maldives are expensive, there are a few activities you can enjoy with complete peace of mind, at no extra cost. Sunbathing on a deckchair with your eyes in the blue of the lagoon is the first of these. We also recommend that you buy fins, mask and snorkel so you can splash around in the lagoon in search of reef sharks, rays and colorful fish. Very few island hotels lend this equipment free of charge, and it costs around ten dollars (excluding tax) a day to rent it.

A VAT of 6% is applied to everyday consumer goods. It rises to 12% on tourist products. As of January1, 2022, an exit tax is attached to all airline tickets. The amount is US$30 per person travelling in economy class, US$60 per person travelling in business class, US$90 per person travelling in first class and US$120 per person travelling in private jet.

Alcohol is a highly controlled import and is subject to heavy taxes. A cocktail costs at least US$13-15.

What budget to eat Maldives?

You should expect to pay around ten ruffias for a full meal in a Maldivian restaurant. Malé's trendy restaurants are often a little more expensive.

Expect to pay around MVR 35 for a coffee and MVR 20 for a soda. If you like to party, plan an all-inclusive stay on an island hotel, so you don't spend too much money at the hotel bar.

What is the budget for accommodation Maldives?

The Maldives are very expensive, and it's difficult, if not impossible, to find a hotel for less than US$80 a night. In the island hotels, rates start at around US$200 per room in mid-season. Resorts will ask you to pay in full before you arrive. A deposit by credit card is usually required at the time of booking.

Travel budget Maldives and cost of living

The Maldives is one of the most expensive destinations. In addition to the price of your room, you'll need to add the cost of transfers to the islands, activities you'll be undertaking and meals not included in your stay. Virtually all hotels in the Maldives offer half-board, full-board or even all-inclusive packages (including alcoholic beverages). Some resorts even offer non-motorized activities. Rates are higher, of course, but may be more advantageous if you're planning an active vacation. Generally speaking, resorts quote their rates exclusive of tax. Add 12% VAT, 10% service charge and US$6 per person per day for green tax.

Small budget. You'll need between US$80 and US$150 per person per day to stay on a local island and enjoy a daily outing (diving, sandbank, desert island, etc.). On an island-hotel, you'll need at least US$250 per day per person for a half-board stay, with no activities. The islands-hotels offering such low rates are often old-fashioned and far removed from the dream brochures, except for the landscapes.

Average budget. You'll need between US$250 and US$400 per day per person to stay in a 3* or 4* category island-hotel on a half-board basis. You'll need to add at least US$100 per day if you're diving.

Big budget. You'll need between US$500 and US$1,800 per person per day to stay in a 5* island hotel. Some resorts charge even higher rates, and the cost of seaplane transfers in particular can weigh heavily on the total price of your stay.
