For two days, floats and parades followed one another in the streets of Malé to celebrate the establishment of the Second Republic.
After gaining independence from the British, the Maldives continued on the road to democracy. In November 1967, the Maldivian Parliament voted to change from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. In March 1968, a referendum was held among the population, who voted overwhelmingly in favor of the establishment of the Republic. The Second Republic of the Maldives was proclaimed on November 11, 1968. The Maldivian state commemorates this event with float parades and brass bands in Malé, and the population enjoys a public holiday.
