The Maldivian national holiday is celebrated according to the lunar calendar in memory of the victory against the Portuguese in 1573.
The Maldives celebrate their Independence Day in July and their National Day on the first day of the third month of the lunar calendar. Called Qaumee Dhuvas in Dhivehi, it commemorates the day on which Mohammed Thakurufaanu and his followers defeated the Portuguese in 1573. The Portuguese landed in the Maldives in 1558 and imposed their colonial laws. But when they tried to impose Christianity as the official religion, threatening non-converted inhabitants with the death penalty, the population rebelled.
