The passage to the new year is marked by the firing of fireworks all over the country, including island-hotels.
In the Maldives, as everywhere else, the start of the New Year is celebrated with pomp and ceremony. In Malé, the capital, the population gathers at the Grand Mosque square and on the long jetty for a grand fireworks display. On the local tourist and resort islands, New Year's Eve is also celebrated with gusto and gourmet menus in the restaurants. Some islands light up the sky with fireworks, and dance parties are held to keep the party going all night long.
