This festival commemorates the failure of the 1988 coup d'état instigated by Sri Lankan mercenaries. A military parade takes place in Malé.
Every November 3, the Maldives commemorate the attempted coup d'état of 1988, instigated by a group of Sri Lankan mercenaries. The group arrived in the country disguised as tourists and seized the port of Malé, its airport and the national radio and television stations by force of arms. The Maldivian president, who had taken refuge, asked for help from the Americans and British, who were too far away to intervene. He then turned to India, which launched a military operation dubbed "Operation Cactus". A military parade in Malé.
