The month of fasting is highly respected in the local Maldivian islands. In the resorts, you won't notice the difference.
The fasting month of Muslims around the world, called ramazan in the Maldives, is highly respected. The date is set according to the full moon. The month of fasting and prayer begins when the first crescent of the new moon is visible. Ulemas (religious dignitaries) scrutinize the sky carefully, which explains why Ramadan does not necessarily begin on the same day throughout the Muslim world. On the inhabited islands of the Maldives, life slows down for 28 days. In the resorts, you won't notice the difference with the rest of the year.
