The birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, called Mauludu in the Maldives, is celebrated for 4 days in the local islands.
This festival commemorates the birth of the Prophet Mohammed in the third month of the lunar calendar, and gives rise to 4 public holidays in the Maldives. On this occasion, large gatherings take place in mosques, where they are reminded of the meaning of Islam and the teachings of the Prophet. The Koran is read, poems are recited and the Prophet's praises are sung. It's also a time for family and friends to gather around a communal meal. Part of the meal is donated to the poor and needy.
