Traditional dragon boat race in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan.
The Dragon Boat Festival has its roots in the legend of Qu Yuan, a poet and minister in ancient China, who is said to have drowned in protest against the corruption of his time. To protect his body, or in an attempt to save it, villagers are said to have thrown rice dumplings into the river and sailed on dragon-shaped boats. Today, the event is celebrated with dragon boat races and the consumption of zongzi, a traditional dish of the festival.
