Although Kyrgyzstan has remained very close to Moscow, independence has been celebrated, mainly in Bishkek and Osh, since 1991.
The anniversary of the country's independence, which occurred on August 31, 1991 without the country really asking for it, is celebrated throughout the country with parades and official concerts. Parades are organized in the country's major cities (Bishkek and Osh in particular), and it's above all an opportunity to engage in traditional equestrian jousting, in particular with the great bozkachi at the Bishkek racecourse, where the country's best teams compete in a discipline that has become emblematic of Central Asia.
