The first major national holiday established after the country's independence. The festivities take place mainly in Osh and Bishkek.
May 5, 1993 is the date chosen to celebrate the country's constitution since independence in 1991. Although the current constitution has been amended many times since then, notably during the violent power struggles between the northern and southern clans (2003, 2006, 2007 and 2010). In 2021, a referendum formalized the country's transition to a presidential system, to the detriment of the parliamentary system that had prevailed (and had been the only one in the whole of Central Asia for a decade). A new constitution was formalized on January 25, 2021.
