Christmas is celebrated by Russians in Uzbekistan on January 7, as in all Orthodox countries using the Julian calendar. There are no special celebrations, as most Russians left Uzbekistan after independence. However, if you meet Russian families who have remained in the steppe, you can attend the Christmas celebration and taste the famous koutia or kutya: a mixture of wheat (symbol of eternal life), honey and poppy seeds (fertility and abundance), traditionally cooked for the occasion.
