Practical information : Going out South Korea
Timetable
Nightclubs and clubs will have similar opening hours to those in France. They are generally open between 9pm and 6am. Karaoke bars also close quite late, if at all, but this varies from one establishment to another. As for shows, here again the schedule varies from case to case, even if most of them take place in the evening.
Budget & Tips
For a nightclub entrance, you need between 10,000 and 30,000 won, drinks not included. For the shows, the prices are really variable but it is good to note that often you can get a discount by taking the tickets directly on their website. For karaoke, it all depends on which one you choose. The cheapest way is certainly to go to a noraebang corner (코인 노래방) because you pay per song (about 500 won). Then for the other noraebang, the rate will vary according to the standing of the establishment, between 7,000 and 30,000 won for one hour. Finally, for the establishments where you can eat and drink, you should count between 45,000 and 60,000 won, drinks and food included. In the vast majority of noraebangs, you are offered 20 minutes of songs for free.
To be booked
Reservations are only required for shows or, very rarely, for very exclusive clubs.
Night transport
Cabs are everywhere, especially in the big cities. So there's no need to worry about getting back to your hotel late. The same applies to cities with one or more metro lines, which are active well into the night.
Age restrictions
In all establishments serving alcohol, you will be systematically asked to show proof of age, i.e. that you are at least 19 years old in Korea. And don't try to outsmart them: the Koreans are very strict on this point, as the closure of their establishment could be at stake. If, out of a group of 4 young people over the age of majority, only one is unable to produce identification, then alcohol will not be served to the whole group. On the other hand, even minors can go alone to noraebang which do not serve alcohol.
What's very local
Karaoke is the most Korean outing you can make. It is essential to pass through this box at least once during a visit on Korean soil.
Smokers
Smoking is generally not allowed in the various establishments. Afterwards, some noraebang are an exception (you will see ashtrays on the tables) and some clubs and discos have a small room for smokers, similar to those you can find in airports.
Tourist traps
There's little to report in this respect, as Koreans are often kind and honest with foreigners. Nevertheless, some clubs may charge foreigners a higher entrance fee. In this case, don't get upset and find another one.
