When spring arrives, Marzanna, the goddess of winter, is seized and drowned during a carnival procession.
The drowning of Marzanna is an ancient Slavic tradition. When spring arrives, Marzanna, a straw effigy of the goddess of winter, death and disease, is seized. Traditionally, a procession, led by children, carries the symbol of winter through the town, accompanied by music, traditional costumes, masquerade costume and make-up. At the end, Marzanna is drowned in the local lake. Today, it's mainly a youth festival, when students are released from classes and liven up the bars and cafés.
