Traditionally, on the Thursday before Lent, before believers enter a long period of religious contemplation and fasting, they gorge themselves on as many sweets as possible that will be forbidden later. Obviously, the more sugar, butter, jam and cream, the better. One then lines up in front of the bakeries for the ultimate sweet treat: the pączki, a doughnut with jam. It is not uncommon to have a competition to see who can eat the most during the day!
