MUSEUM OF THE FORMER EXTERMINATION CAMP OF CHELMNO
Chelmno was the first extermination camp of Jews established in 1939. The castle served as a "place of reception". He did not have gas chambers but modified trucks to make the exhaust gas available inside the truck. The bodies were then taken directly into an adjacent forest where they were buried (they were incinerated later). The site therefore has several parts: the location of the ruins of the castle, an archaeological site and the Rzuchów forest with the cemetery, a monument and wall of remembrance, commemorative plaques and the museum pavilion.
