Discover Poland : Climate

Harsh weather, endless winter, snowstorms and freezing cold... We are hardly exaggerating, but these are the most common clichés that one can hear about the climate in Poland. The reality is quite different! Indeed, the climate of the country is not so imperious, it varies from one region to another and in a rather important way. Indeed, the climatic situation in Poland is complex, due to its oceanic and continental character. It is the maritime influences in the west and continental influences in the east that give it its instability. Despite these irregularities, it is possible to find constants in certain regions. For example, in the center of the country, it is a dry climate that dominates, while in the south, the atmosphere is more humid. Depending on the season, year and region, temperatures and weather can vary drastically. The diversity of the climate makes Poland a pleasant country to visit in all seasons!

Every season has its own weather

The country's advantage, in addition to its diverse landscapes, is its climate, which means you can plan your visit at any time of year. Of course, depending on your wishes and ideas for your stay, you'll need to refer to the local weather in the regions you wish to visit. If you come in spring (March to May), you'll find temperatures between 5°C and 15°C, and plenty of sunshine. Beware, however, that the cold may return from mid-May onwards, creating an alternation between sunny but cool spells and rainy episodes. Spring (especially towards the end of the season) is one of the best times to visit the country. The days are long enough and temperatures mild. What's more, nature is just starting to blossom after its long winter hibernation. If you're looking for warmth, summer will be just what you're looking for, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 30°C. The highest temperatures are to be found in the central and southern regions of the country. The weather remains sunny during this period, although thunderstorms and showers can occur in July (especially in the mountains). Autumn is dry and sunny, with mild temperatures. This is a very pleasant time to visit Poland. Called "golden autumn"(złota jesie), this season offers magnificent autumn landscapes. Winter confirms the cliché, as it is indeed harsh and snowy! However, with global warming, temperatures during this period are (unfortunately) tending to rise, making winters slightly less harsh. There is a strong contrast between the western part of the country, where winters are warmer and shorter, and the eastern part, which is subject to the cold Siberian winds. This season runs from November to March.

Organize your stay according to the seasons

As explained in the previous lines, spring is one of the best seasons to travel to Poland. You can easily enjoy the activities and beautiful walks in the open air. The country has many national parks and reserves. You will have the opportunity to observe many species of birds and plants! Note that May1 and May 3 are public holidays, which leaves room for a long weekend. Poles travel a lot during this time. The summer season (July/August) is unsurprisingly the busiest time for tourists, especially around the Baltic Sea, the Masurian lakes, the eastern forests and the Carpathians. Just like in spring, if you want to enjoy the fresh air, you can do so in summer. Go to the Baltic coast to enjoy the beach and swimming! Culture lovers will be delighted by the various festivals, concerts and cultural events. Poland has many open-air museums: why not attend a historical reenactment? If you decide to venture into the mountains to hike or bike, beware of thunderstorms that can occur, especially in July. In the autumn, Poles go mushroom picking and you can enjoy this activity in the forests and undergrowth. From the end of August to October, you should not have too many problems with rain, while November can be rainy: bring your raincoat! Winter is a great time for snow, skiing and winter sports lovers. The season in the resorts generally starts in December and ends in March. Christmas markets are held on the Ryneks (central square of the cities), so take the time to walk around and browse through the stalls.
