Practical information : Move & Laze around Mayotte
Budget & Tips
Sea outings may seem expensive at first glance (€60 to €80 for a day), but they're not when you consider the spectacle on offer and the number of hours spent on (or in) the water. For sporting activities, expect to pay between €10 and €20 for an hourly rental of a paddle or kayak. And for those on a tighter budget, there are free activities such as hiking and snorkeling.
What's very local
Diving is the sport to try out at least once in Mayotte, where the seabed is unique and there are many service providers to help you discover different spots. The guides are highly professional and the equipment is of the highest quality, so they can reassure the most timid and challenge the most adventurous. Another activity that really comes into its own in Mayotte is microlighting. Flying over the two islands and the double barrier reef is a priceless spectacle that will stay with you forever. Finally, if you're lucky enough to take part in the famous Mamoudzou tire race, it's undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited event of the year for the Mahorais, a sport that's not nearly as easy as it looks.
Your documents please
You'll need a medical certificate if you want to take up scuba diving, parachuting or aviation courses. For baptisms, no papers are required, but if you have any special health conditions, be sure to discuss them with your guide beforehand.
To be booked
Book your sea or air outings in advance, as you're not the only one with the idea, especially at weekends when mainlanders living on the island will be competing with you for places. For hikes with Les Naturalistes, remember to book at the beginning of the month when the schedule of outings is published, as places go very quickly. More generally, you don't often drop in unannounced on Mayotte, especially during the week, and all activities must be booked in advance. At the very least, call the day before to make sure the provider will be open.
Main events
There are many events in Mayotte, often with a music and dance component, allowing you to discover local rhythms. Most are free and open to the general public, and are often organized on the initiative of local authorities or the Département. If you want to keep up to date with what's going on, check out the What's up Mayotte Facebook page, or pick up a copy of the guidebook on arrival at the airport. For boat trip enthusiasts, July-August is the time of the whale migration, which is eagerly awaited at sea. Make sure you book well in advance.
Tourist traps
Many locals have makeshift boats and will offer you a tour for a small fee, but always check the reliability of the person and the boat before you climb aboard. It is advisable to go only with people who have been recommended to you, or with official service providers.
