ABOLITON DE L'ESCLAVAGE
Cultural associations commemorate the end of slavery on May 28, 1848.
The abolition of slavery in Guadeloupe and its dependencies was decreed on May 27, 1848 by the Privy Council of Guadeloupe, but not on Saint-Martin until the following day. On this day, now a public holiday, ceremonies and events highlighting the heritage of yesteryear are organized, notably at the Agrément traffic circle around the statue of Lady Liberty. Created by Théo Bonev, and unveiled to mark the 159th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade, the statue depicts a black woman holding a gas lamp in her left hand.
