Not all stores in Germany have the same opening hours. Opening hours vary from region to region. In most of Germany's Länder, large food stores are open from 8am to 8pm, and downtown stores from 10am to 8pm. In small towns and villages, stores close earlier, or are only open for a few hours a day. Stores close on Sundays and public holidays, except for bakeries, station stores and petrol stations. Many hairdressers and other small craft shops are closed on Mondays.

Not all Länder have the same public holidays, as some are predominantly Catholic, others Protestant. A few dates are common to all:

National holiday: October 3, official date of reunification.

Christmas: December 25 and 26.

Sales

Generally speaking, with some adjustments depending on the Länder, in Germany winter sales last from the end of December to the end of January, and summer sales from the last week of July to mid-August. In any case, there are no strictly regulated periods for sales. German retailers are free to run promotions as they see fit, on the dates they choose, depending on the economic climate and their stocks. So it's up to the consumer to browse around and look for bargains.
