The whole island celebrates the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico, which occurred on March 22, 1873. Numerous events and meetings are organized every year throughout the island. Colonized by the Spanish, then attached to the United States since 1898, without being part of it either, the status of the Puerto Rico archipelago remains complex to say the least and a source of inequality. This day has a special meaning for many Puerto Ricans, because beyond the abolition of slavery, it is also a question of emancipation.
