The Saint-Barthélemy marine reserve created in 1996 (formerly the Garnet Association) covers 1,200 hectares and aims to protect five areas of the island. The underwater bottoms of this reserve include valuable coral reefs. The regulations in these protected areas, in terms of navigation, fishing or diving, are very important. The Territorial Environment Agency is responsible for its management.
