Discover Saint Barthélemy : Sports and leisure

If you're not the type to laze around on a deserted beach for the whole of your vacation, don't worry, there's plenty to do in Saint-Barth. Of course, the main focus is on the sea. Water sports are favored all around the island, starting with sailing. Everything is possible on the water or underwater, with some excellent diving spots. On land, too, there's plenty to choose from, including tennis, golf, horse riding, hiking and cycling, and you can take to the skies in a helicopter. In terms of infrastructure, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovitch, owner of Chelsea soccer club in the UK and of a second home on the island, has spent €3 million renovating the only mixed rugby and soccer stadium on Saint-Jean. The Barracudas rugby club, for example, will be playing there.

Cruises and water sports

While sailing is the most popular water sport, you can also rent a motorboat (for one or more days), with or without a skipper, to explore the islets, tour the island or admire the sunset. Paddleboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, jet-skiing and water-skiing are also popular activities. In short, there's no shortage of options for taking to the water! Surfers can also take advantage of some great spots in Saint-Jean, Anse-des-Cayes, Lorient and Grand-Cul-de-Sac.

Long live the world of silence!

If there's one place in the world where you can safely start scuba diving, it's Saint-Barth! Access to the 15 or so sites (to a maximum depth of 30 m) in the marine nature reserve takes no more than 5 to 20 minutes by boat. The island lies on a continental shelf, and dives are suitable for beginners and advanced divers alike. For experienced Level 1 divers and above, other sites 20 to 35 minutes away are more exposed to the particularly rough winter seas. Water temperature varies between 25°C and 30°C year-round. The best time to dive is the second quarter of the calendar year, when a multitude of fish are born.

Big game fishing

Saint-Barth has become a mecca for big-game fishing in the Caribbean. Fishing competitions are held throughout the year, with the best anglers in the West Indies coming to compete. The best-known is the St. Barth Open Fishing Tournament in July, organized by Océan Must. Several agencies offer full-day or half-day trips. But be warned: big-game or sport fishing isn't just a short trip out to sea! You've got to have your sea legs, because you're in for a rough ride.

The dream? To fly over the island!

And what could be more spectacular than seeing the islands from the air? An extraordinary experience, made possible by companies like West Indies Helicopters. Headphones on, eyes wide open so as not to miss a thing of the journey, our emotions soar to new heights as we take in the insolent blue of the Caribbean Sea and the islets that enhance its beauty! A feeling of freedom, a multitude of sensations and an unusual way to visit the Caribbean islands. There are several options open to us (we'd love to try them all, the adrenalin makes us want to fly), from island-to-island transfers to a panoramic tour of the island, for full days of discovery. It's an adventure you can't afford to miss if you want to experience the islands to the full!
