Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Madeira
Timetable
Most stores open from 9am to 12:30pm (or 1pm) and from 2pm (or 2:30pm) to 7pm. Some close on Saturday afternoons, and often close on Sundays. Opening hours or days may be extended in high season. Shopping centers (which close much later, at around 10-11pm, and even midnight for some in Funchal), some supermarkets and craft stores are usually open all weekend.
Budget & Tips
The cost of living in Madeira is a little higher than in Portugal. To buy fruit (local, of course!), target small street vendors, who are cheaper than the Mercado dos Lavradores, where vendors charge "tourist" prices. Generally speaking, avoid souvenir stores if you want to save money, and buy directly from supermarkets (especially for items such as bottles of poncha or bolo de miel).
What's very local
Handicrafts, especially embroidery and basketry, are a great source of local pride. Of course, you can also buy Madeira wine (prices can exceed a thousand euros!) or a blend of poncha, flower seeds, honey cakes and typical Madeiran canoes. However, haggling is not at all common practice in Madeira. For ideas on souvenirs, see our "What to bring back from your trip" section.
Tourist traps
You'll find everything in the souvenir stores, including quite a few items made in China. Not necessarily the best option for a little Madeira souvenir. Whenever possible, buy local and authentic to encourage the local economy. In Funchal, the Mercado dos Lavradores has become a veritable tourist factory. It's not always pleasant to be stopped in the aisles to taste this or that exotic fruit, once, twice, three times... It's better not to let yourself be tempted if you don't want to buy anything afterwards! In any case, fruit is sold at a much higher price than elsewhere.
