The Madeira Carnival is one of the major festivities of the calendar. A real festival of colours with the rhythm of samba!
From the start of the weekend preceding Mardi Gras, fanfares and samba music echo through the streets of the capital, as the city prepares for ten days of colorful carnival festivities. On Saturday, thousands of revellers, Madeirans and visitors alike, flock to attend the allegorical procession, the highlight of the carnival. Floats are paraded and costumes compete in eccentricity. For Mardi Gras, the trapalhão procession takes over. Everyone pulls out their wildest disguises to join in the collective euphoria of the parade.
