July1st is a public holiday in the whole Madeira archipelago. It commemorates the independence of Madeira granted by the Portuguese Constitution in 1976. The day is divided into three main events: a solemn ceremony is first held in the Regional Legislative Assembly, then the representatives of the official entities go to lay flowers at the site of the autonomy monument, and finally the religious ceremony of the Te Deum is celebrated in the Funchal Cathedral.
