Practical information : Move & Laze around Madeira
Budget & Tips
The best plan is to pack a snack and set off to conquer the island's extraordinary landscapes. Hiking is Madeira's number one activity (and just as well, it's free!).
What's very local
In summer, Madeirans love to take advantage of the many natural pools to cool off and spend the day by the water with their families. The most impressive pools are at Porto Moniz, in the north of the island. But beware, it's very crowded during the summer season!
To be booked
There's no need to book two months in advance, even in high season, but it's a good idea to book certain activities a little in advance (if you want to organize a guided trek, for example). In high season, the crowds are in full swing. Beware of Porto Santo, as the island is small and the offer more limited, so it may be wise to anticipate your bookings.
Main events
In July, the Bay of Funchal plays host to Madeira's great traditional canoe regatta. The 2.5-kilometre-long course of these fishing boats begins on the quays of Funchal harbour and ends at Barreirinha, in the old town. At the end of July, the traditional Madeira Rally (Rali Vinho Madeira) attracts the crowds, a speed event that counts towards the European Rally Championship (and one of Europe's most famous automobile competitions). Several stretches of road are closed to the public during the event. In the same month, cyclists gather for the Volta à Ilha em Bicicleta, a tour of the island by bicycle. At the end of December, the Funchal City Tour (Volta à cidade do Funchal) brings together national and international athletes in downtown Funchal.
