On Christmas Eve, Badnji dan, people go out to collect young oak branches - badnjak - and the atmosphere in the streets is festive.
The Orthodox calendar is still based on the Julian calendar, which is why Christmas is celebrated on January 7. Christmas is, together with Easter, the biggest religious holiday in Serbia and it is celebrated mainly in the family, but the atmosphere is festive all week. On Christmas Eve, Badnji dan, it is customary to collect young oak branches - badnjak - and bring them into the house at nightfall. In Belgrade, these branches are gathered in a big bonfire in front of the St. Sava church. This is an event not to be missed.
