October is the Creole heritage month with the main day of festivities held on the last Sunday of the month. Each year, a different venue is chosen to celebrate the rich Creole heritage of Saint Lucia. On that day and during the whole month, people dress in traditional clothes or wear the madras cloth in a more modern attire. The Creole language is spoken widely and women cook "an tan lontan" (back in the days) dishes on coal pots such as black fish, turtles, opossums, octopus and more. It is the time where people will exhibit traditional items in business places, government building and schools. La Marguerite festival held in October 17th and takes place in Castries with a religious ceremony and street parade depicting characters of the monarchy.
