Budget & Tips
You're in trekking heaven. Dominica is the dream island par excellence for lovers of green tourism, a land of adventure, where you can escape along the Waitukubuli Trail in search of waterfalls, lakes, cascades and rivers. There are different levels of hiking, for both the experienced and the novice! Let yourself be lulled by the songs of mountain whistlers, malfinis and other parrots that accompany your hike.
Splendid little waterfalls, nestled in the rainforest and lit up by the sun's rays, await you. With or without a guide, walkers are sure to be delighted along the almost 500 km of marked trails! Please note, however, that some hikes require the presence of an experienced guide. A fee is charged for visiting the national parks: US$5 for a day's visit with no limit on the number of visits, and US$12 for a week's visit. Entrance to the Waitukubuli National Trail: US$12/day, US$40/2 weeks.
To be booked
In high season, it's best to think about booking water sports activities in advance. Dominica's diving spots are among the finest in the Caribbean, attracting visitors who come especially for this activity. Their entire stay is organized around diving. A number of tour operators offer diving packages.
The island is also renowned for being one of the best places to see dolphins, whales and sperm whales. Sperm whales are present all year round on the island's west coast, while humpback whales are mainly seen from November to June. The calm, warm waters are a haven for females as they give birth to their young. Whale watchers are subject to strict regulations to avoid disturbing the animals.
