Every year, the Netherlands commemorates the victims of war on the evening of May 4. National interest in this event is high. At 8 p.m., the entire country observes a 2-minute silence. Streetcars stop, cafés and restaurants fall silent, and sports competitions also pause to respect the silence. The highlight of the commemoration takes place on Amsterdam's Dam Square, where the King lays a wreath and delivers a speech.
