It took us 5 hours to go up the Ataa fjord north to reach Eqi, a 4 km wide glacier that moves from 2 to 3 meters a day. In the face of him for a few hours, we are sure to see him dressed, that is, ice breaks down and falls into a huge crash. The noise is continuous because the cracks are also inside the glacier. We stop at 1.5 km for security reasons (some waves are real tsunamis), but it is so huge that it seems next. A great time to follow in video.
From our emotions and after a good evening on the base camp where Paul-Émile Victor had settled, we go hiking to the moraine. It is the pile of rocky debris carried by the glacier and offers an incredible view. The lapse time (camera that makes photos at fixed intervals) deposited at 5 p. m. will be recovered the following day around 11 a. m. (double hike so!). Night activity is pretty strong in particular around midnight for a reason that scientists do not explain to date… To discover in video as well.
The Eqi Glacier is very active during the summer and will no longer be accessible from September to June due to the ice that has accumulated. A short season therefore to discover this exceptional place.
