New Year's Eve is celebrated by the whole population with dances around the tree. Christmas runs from December 13 to January 6.

Christmas is a particularly festive occasion in Greenland as 99% of the population is Christian. The lights on the Christmas trees are lit on the first Sunday of Advent until January 6 when the decorations are removed. On Christmas Eve, the children visit houses in town, sing songs and receive treats. St. Lucia is celebrated on December 13 in honor of St. Lucia of Syracuse. Very popular in schools, it marks the beginning of the Christmas season. Christmas Eve is celebrated with dances around the Christmas tree.
