Celebration of the start of the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821.
The first of the two national holidays is the "Commemoration of the Greek Revolution of 1821" (Εορτασμός της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821/Εortasmοs tis Ellinikιs Epanαstasis tou 1821). It commemorates the start of the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821. March 25 is the Christian feast of the Annunciation. Parades are held throughout the country, including a large military parade alternating between Athens and Thessaloniki.
