Depending on the season and the day of the week, stores don't close until 8pm, 9pm or even 10pm. What's more, there are only four public holidays on which stores are closed: January¹ (New Year), March 14 (Constitution Day), September 8 (Our Lady of Meritxell, patron saint of Andorra) and December 25 (Christmas). That leaves 361 potential shopping days.

Shopping is by no means a new activity in Andorra. If locals know all about the latest promotions and unmissable addresses, so do visiting travellers, who can quickly and easily keep abreast of all the bargains not to be missed. In any case, no matter when you visit the Principality, you're bound to find a bargain. That's because, despite having adopted the euro as its national currency in 2014 (so there's no need to worry about changing currencies), Andorra isn't part of the European Union and therefore isn't subject to the same tax rules as its neighbors Spain and France. The result: ultra-low VAT (4.5%), enabling you to buy a wide range of quality products from all sectors, and even from prestigious brands, at lower prices.

Andorra's winter sales generally run from mid-December to early March, while the summer sales start in mid-June and last three months. However, you should be aware that Andorra's very attractive prices mean that you're guaranteed a good bargain all year round (although you should compare the prices displayed in stores with other sources, such as the Internet).

Tourist traps

Experience in the field has shown us that what may seem like a good deal at first glance is not always the case. Some stores specializing in household goods on the main semi-pedestrian shopping route straddling Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, including Avenida Meritxell and Avenida Carlemany, don't display prices in the window. A word of advice: steer clear of these tourist traps, which take advantage of the country's reputation for tax-free shopping. These stores gamble on the fact that tourists rely entirely on Andorra's tax-free policy, and advertise rates at the customer's whim. As mobile data is extremely expensive in Andorra (don't forget to deactivate data roaming on your mobile before entering the country, at the risk of receiving an exorbitant bill), you won't be able to make a price comparison at the time. Before making any major purchase (or not), take the time to connect to the Internet and compare the rates you've been quoted with those in other stores. This is particularly advisable when shopping in small, independent boutiques.
