Budget & Tips
Youth hostels are very common in Austria, and very popular with the young Austrian public and students. They are usually the cheapest option for accommodation (excluding camping), and prices vary depending on whether you are staying in a dormitory or shared room, or in a triple, double or single room.
Youth hostels often offer a wide range of services, such as holiday programmes, ski lessons, etc. In addition, they are often located in very privileged areas, and sometimes even in listed buildings.
Whatever the price, the rooms are generally clean and comfortable, and the differences between hotel categories are sometimes minimal. You can find luxurious frühstückpensionen with sauna and hammam for €30 a night, or a really cheap hotel with a room for two people for €43.50. A 3-star room costs between €90 and €150, a double and more from 4-star upwards. The rates are generally given "per person" by the hoteliers.
The campsites, numerous and comfortable, are more or less the same as in France, open from April to October, but some bad tongues advise to rent heated bungalows. Remember that continental summers are very hot, springs and autumns often sunny, and that camping in Austria is undeniably an inexpensive, safe and pleasant way to visit the country.
Beware, the tick, which carries diseases of varying degrees of danger, is the subject of poster campaigns in spring. When camping, be careful and avoid walking with your feet and legs uncovered in the tall grass.
What's very local
It is not easy to find your way around all the names! The first principle is that the top of the range is represented by the "international" names, those that all foreigners understand: hotel, restaurant. Among the more local names, in decreasing order of standing, come the gasthof, the pension or frühstückpension, the gasthaus, the privatzimmer and bauernhaus designating, more or less as in our country, guest houses or farmhouses that rent rooms.
