In the northern part of Cyprus, the commemoration of 23 April gives rise to festivities in which all schoolchildren take part.
It's a holiday in the North. On April 23, 1920, the first session of the Turkish Grand National Assembly was held in Ankara. Created by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, it foreshadowed the end of the Ottoman Empire and the foundation of the new Turkish state in 1923. Since 1927, this Turkish national holiday has been associated with Children's Day. And since 1983, in the northern part of Cyprus, the commemoration has included festivities involving schoolchildren.
