A tradition common to all Eastern Christians, Pure Monday (Kathari Devtera) marks the beginning of Great Lent, a seven-week period when the faithful prepare for Easter. The Orthodox, Armenians and Maronites of Cyprus, even if they are not very religious, still tend to follow this custom of no longer eating meat. Everyone wishes each other kali saracosti ("good fasting") and goes on a family picnic. The sky is covered with kites. These "paper eagles" (hartaétou) are the symbol of the elevation of the soul towards purification.
