The Republic of Cyprus joins Greece in celebrating the beginning of the Greek uprising against the Ottomans in 1821. In fact, the Greek War of Independence probably began on 17 March 1821. But the date of 25 March was chosen because it coincides with the Feast of the Annunciation, the announcement of her divine motherhood made to Mary by the Archangel Gabriel (7 April for the Armenians of Cyprus). On that day, a civil and military parade took place in front of the Greek Embassy in South Nicosia, including a detachment of the Greek presidential guard, the famous evzones.
